The Painted Shelters of Bhimbetka
At Bhimbetka, among great rocks in central India, hundreds of shelters hold ancient paintings. People lived here across an immense span of time. On the rock they painted hunts, dances, and animals. It is among the earliest art on this soil — the first time we can almost see the people themselves.
Come now to a place of great rocks. In the Vindhya hills of central India, south of the city of Bhopal, nature has stacked huge stones of sandstone into caves and open shelters. The forest grows around them. This place is called .
People sheltered here for an immense span of time, from the Old Stone Age down into much later days. And on the walls of these shelters, they left something wonderful. They left paintings — hundreds upon hundreds of them, across many shelters.
When were they made? The paintings begin in the age scholars call the , the Middle Stone Age, perhaps around 10,000 BCE. But we should be careful and honest. People lived here far earlier still, and they kept painting here for thousands of years after. So these walls hold not one moment, but a long, long stretch of time.
What did they paint? Life. Hunters with bows, and the animals they knew: deer and bison, tigers, elephants. Rows of people dancing together. Someone gathering wild honey. Games, and gatherings, and the daily round of a living world. They drew mostly in red ochre, an earth-red, and in white, straight onto the bare rock.
In many shelters, one painting lies over another, layer on layer. Why? Because people came back. For thousands of years, band after band returned to these same walls and added their own marks. The rock became a kind of memory, written in colour over countless lifetimes.
Because this place is so precious, the wider world has named it a treasure for all people. It is honoured as a World Heritage Site, kept safe so that what these first people drew is not lost.
We must be gentle in how we read these scenes. A row of dancers may have been a dance of joy, or a dance with meaning we cannot guess. We do not know their thoughts. But we can say this much: here the human urge to make art, to dance, and to keep what matters is already alive, deep in the past, on this very soil.
Someone once stood at a rock wall and pressed a red hand-mark or drew a leaping deer, hoping, perhaps, that it would last. It did. It outlived them by thousands of years. What small thing would you make, if you knew a stranger would meet it long after you are gone?

In places, painting lies over painting, layer upon layer, because people returned to these walls for thousands of years. Here, for the first time, the deep past stops being only stone and bone. We see what these people watched, and what they wished to keep.
