A First Honest Threshold
We have met the first farmers. A gentle question now waits for us. Did the religion and language we now call Hindu grow straight from villages like these, in place? Or did some of it arrive later, from outside? Or is the truth a weaving of both? Here your guide steps to the Threshold. We have spent these tellings among the first farmers: their fields, their cattle, their pots and beads, the slow swelling of villages toward towns. Now a quiet question rises, and it is a good one. Where does all this lead?
Here is the question, simply put. The religion, the language, the whole way of life we now call Hindu, did it grow straight up from villages like these, here on this very soil, in an unbroken line? Or did some of it come later, carried by people moving in from elsewhere? Or is the answer a gentle weaving of both?
This is a real question, and a much-studied one. Honest, careful people still differ on it. So this is where your guide must do something new, something he will do again whenever the ground beneath our feet is contested. He steps to the Threshold.

Whichever way the truth runs, this much is sure and beautiful: real life was lived here, on this land, deep in time, by farmers and herders and makers. The threads we have followed are true threads.
