A section from the journey

Who Is the One Behind the Gods?

The hymns praised many gods. But a daring question had been growing: behind all of them, is there one reality? The seers begin to point past the gods toward a single ground of everything. They will call it Brahman. Here we only meet the question. Its great answer waits in the next age.

Think of all the gods we have met. the fire. Indra the storm. who watches truth. Ushas the lovely dawn. The hymns are full of them, each praised, each great.

But all along, a daring thread ran through the songs. Long before now, one famous hymn had said a startling thing. The wise, it sang, give many names to what is truly One.

"They call him Indra, Mitra, Varuṇa, Agni... To what is One, sages give many a title." — so sang an early hymn of the Rigveda.

Sit with how bold that is. The singer does not deny the gods. He says, rather, that the many may be faces of one. As if the sun and the storm and the dawn were all light from a single hidden source.

Now, in the quiet of the forest, that hint grows into a real question. The seers begin to ask it plainly. Behind every god, behind every gift and every flame, is there one reality that holds the whole world up?

They reach for a word to name it. The word is . Hold it lightly for now. Brahman means the vast ground of all that is — the one reality beneath the many. It is not one more god among the gods. It is what stands behind them all.

Now I must be honest with you, as a teacher should be. This idea is far too large to open here. And there is a second wonder that goes with it — the discovery of a deep Self inside you that somehow answers to this vast reality. Both are the great treasure of the age that comes next.

So think of this section as a doorway, not the room beyond it. We are standing at the threshold, feeling the question grow large. In the forest, with the great sages of the next era, the door will open. For now, we only knock.

The seers wondered whether the many things of the world might rest on one hidden reality. Look around you at all the different things you can see right now. Have you ever felt, even faintly, that behind all of them something single and quiet holds it together? Hold that feeling. It is the very question the seers were learning to ask.
