Mimamsa: Ritual and the Word

The fifth darshana is Mimamsa, the keeper of the rite. It takes the oldest part of the Veda, the part about sacrifice and action, with deep seriousness. For Mimamsa, dharma means the correct doing of the sacred Vedic action. And the Veda, it holds, was made by no one at all; it is eternal, beginningless, its very sounds carrying power. Here our old word dharma shows us a new face.

The fifth darshana is called , which means "deep reflection." It is the careful keeper of the rite. Of all the six, it stays closest to the most ancient heart of the Veda, the fire and the offering we walked through long ago.

While some schools turned to the Veda's later, questioning parts, Mimamsa turned lovingly back to its oldest layer: the hymns, the sacrifice, the sacred action. Its root sayings are the Mimamsa Sutras of a sage named Jaimini, gathered in the centuries around the turn of the era.

Mimamsa teaches something striking about the Veda itself. The Veda, it says, was written by no one. Not by any sage. Not even by a god. It has no author and no beginning. It simply always was, eternal as truth, and the rishis of old did not invent its words but only heard them, as one hears a sound already ringing.

And because the Veda is held to be eternal in this way, its very sounds are sacred. The mantras, spoken correctly in the rite, in the right order and the right tone, carry a real power of their own. For Mimamsa, the word rightly said is itself a holy act. This is why the school built such careful rules for reading and reciting every line.

But here is the teaching to hold most closely, for it brings back an old friend. It is the word . We have met this great word again and again on our journey, and each time it has shown us a new face.

Remember its faces. At the dawn of the Vedas, dharma grew from rta, the deep order of the world. In the great epics, it meant right conduct and duty, doing what is right even when it is hard. With the emperor Ashoka, it meant a ruler's care for all his people, kindness made into law.

Now Mimamsa shows us dharma's oldest, most exact face. Here, dharma means the correct performance of the sacred Vedic action, the rite carried out just as it should be. To do the holy act rightly is, for Mimamsa, to uphold dharma itself. One word, worn many ways, each one true. That breadth is the richness of dharma, and it is worth carrying with you.

Think of a small daily act you do with real care, exactly and faithfully, perhaps a kindness, a duty, a quiet ritual of your own. Mimamsa would say that to do the right thing rightly is itself a kind of sacred order. Where in your life does doing something well, and with care, feel like more than just the doing?
